Ahhh, the Great Commission (Matthew 28:20)…I grew up in the church, so I probably read it or heard it a thousand times. However, God can reveal something new & powerful in an old familiar verse. This happened to me when the word “always” jumped off the page one day. That word might be the most important word in the Great Commission. I mean imagine this…what if Jesus said, “go to all the world & make disciples, and by the way you’re on your own”. We certainly would fail. But fortunately He said, “I’m with you always”…in other words, “I’ll help you”, “I’ll give you the words to speak & the songs to sing”, and “I’ll point you in the direction where you can be successful & cultivate your gifts”. I don’t know about you, but I need Jesus…things just get ugly when I’m on my own. This song focuses on God always being God. That’s a pretty simple yet profound truth. He is God during the spring as well as the winter, during our peaks as well as our valleys, etc. |

We are all invited, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from Well there’s a battle in this world, and it’s raging for our worship And He’s the Only One that’s worth the fight Jesus said to seek Him first, and everything would work out And we can leave our worries behind So let’s leave here worshipping the Lord God Almighty Since what we worship we become more like 'Cause God is good, God is grand, God is wonderful! I wrote this song back in 2004 for a youth worship service. There were kids coming to youth group wearing mohawks or goth clothes, and I wanted them to know that church was a place where they belonged. Kids seem to like songs that are participatory, so I threw in the “HEY!” so that they could get into the song even if it was their first time hearing it. Also, it serves as a wake up call considering it sometimes takes us too much time to get into worship. This is a way for me to say to everyone (including myself) “hey, it’s time to worship the Lord now”, which is not something we should take lightly! |

Psalm 119:105 is a well known verse: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” But, for some reason, songs based on that phrase are few & far between…this being my attempt. I don’t know about you, but I feel that being a Christian is hard work. Worldly things constantly distract me, so I often need to be redirected or reminded to keep my eyes fixed on how Christ would have me live. |

My sister-in-law (Jackie) gave me an interesting book as a Christmas gift in 2007. It's called Man in White, and is Johnny Cash's historical novel based on the Apostle Paul's conversion. The chorus & title of this song came from a reoccurring phrase in the first half of the book. After reading the story & matching it up with scripture (Acts), I was really inspired by how passionate Paul was in spreading the Gospel. I ended up writing this song from Paul's perspective. What would this world look like if all Christians abandoned self for their call in ministry? Maybe our actions will follow if we start by singing our intentions? |

We won’t be satisfied until Your Kingdom comes What this world needs is transformation, to be reformed from inside out The impact made would be contagious, if we’d embrace a simple rule Let justice roll down like a river, & righteousness like a mighty stream Let love unite a generation, to bring Your Kingdom here © 2007 Steve Kropp Music |

*First Place in VAUMC's 2009 Peach with Justice songwriting contest Notes
In July 2007, we were the house band for a missions-based camp called impact Richmond. This was a very powerful week for everyone involved! It was just awesome to see how these youth were transformed by acts of service in their community. One night at the end of the week we held a worship service for the homeowners where they took the opportunity to thank the youth for being Christ’s hand & feet. We ended this emotional service with singing “How Great is our God”. Halfway through the song, tears were streaming down my face as I realized what bringing His Kingdom to Earth could be!
One video we watched during the week featured snippets of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. I loved how he quoted scripture, particularly Amos 5:24: “No, we are not satisfied and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, & righteousness like a mighty stream”. I was staying at Jackie’s place during the camp, and had some down time during the days to reflect. I came up with this guitar lick fairly quickly, but took most of the 2 weeks of camp to write the lyrics around the missions theme. |

I tired & failed to write a Christmas song for a while until late 2007 when I found inspiration in our church bulletin. It was advent season, and that week a family was lighting the candle of hope while the congregation responded “Come, Lord Jesus, Promised Savior”. Calling Jesus the “Promised Savior” made me think of the Bible as a whole…from the prophesies in the Old Testament, to His birth in the Gospels, to the revelations of His coming again. I was so inspired that I went home and wrote this song in one sitting around a simple acoustic guitar hook. I purposefully wrote the line “there’s room in this heart for You” as a play on the words from Luke 2:7 (“there was no room for them in the inn”). Sometimes I feel distant from God or stagnant in my faith, so I wrote the 3rd verse as a plea to bring back that fire that I first felt when I asked Jesus to come into my heart as my Savior.
The first few times I played this song I was hearing a full band arrangement in my head. My band for impact Richmond that year (2009) was pretty tight, so I asked them to join me for the session. It was the first time in the studio for Brad Berkeley (keys & bgv’s), Chris Chamberlain (drums), and Zach Delcoco (bass), and they brought a freshness & excitement that you can hear in the recording. I always wanted to include the “Strawberry Fields” mellotron sound on one of my songs, and it fit perfectly in the intro. |

I originally just wanted to keep this as a live song, but it’s popularity kept growing & growing among the youth groups we play for. The clincher was when Chris Davis (who produced my debut album, Magnify) got on board to produce a bunch of tracks. He really worked his magic with Weezer-like guitar bends, record scratches, loops, synthesizers, and so on. After I heard it, it was a no-brainer that I had to make it the opening song! |

As I write this, our son Tobin is a few weeks away from turning one. He’s currently going through a phase where he’s very attached to Mommy & Daddy. He’s always making sure we’re in his site, and he often just craves a hug or smile. Once he hears our reassuring words, he’s back to tormenting our pets or spreading his toys throughout the house. Similarly, I find myself often seeking reassurance from my Heavenly Father.
I don’t need to look any further than scripture (see Psalm 42:5 & Psalm 121:1-2) to know that He’s right here. I was listening to the David Crowder*Band and came up with this catchy, energetic chorus. It’s always nice to get another set of ears involved in the creative process, so I invited a worship leader friend of mine (Spike Burton) to play some bass & guitar on the demo. He came up with some great parts that really gave the song its direction. Chris heard the demo and couldn’t wait to record it! This song was particularly fun for me because it was the first studio song that I played electric guitar on. I tracked the siren part with an ebow, and the random noises at the very end of the song by twisting knobs on my delay pedal. |

I went through a phase in the spring of 2007 where I listened to the British piano rock band Keane a lot. Naturally, I found inspiration in their “foreign” rhythms and chord progressions. That summer my band got together to record some demos in a local studio (Linear Sound in Fredericksburg). My high hopes for this song went even higher when Thomas Johnson (my keys player at the time) came up with a great synthesizer hook for the chorus. Chris eventually recreated a studio version of our demo and helped tweak the chorus melody so it fit nicely in a 3-part harmony. In my opinion, this is one of the standouts on the album. It’s used quite a bit at my home church and we seem to “always” include it in our sets on the road! |

I was playing this verse guitar part for months, but was having trouble writing lyrics to go with it. Naturally, I found some inspiration after my wife (Tracy) told me she was pregnant in December of 2006. I started studying fetal growth on the Internet to see what I had gotten myself into?!? The intricacy of the human body is just so amazing! I then did some research on a guy called Snowflake Bentley who figured out how to take pictures of snowflakes through his microscope. This is where your science teacher got the fact that no two snowflakes have the same design. My research soon shifted to the vast aspects of creation (i.e., the Grand Canyon and pictures from the Hubble Telescope). Simply put: God as Creator is very impressive! These lyrics eventually wrote themselves…however, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Tracy came up with the "Matchless Flame" play on words in verse 2.
I felt we needed to go a little more upbeat on this studio version than we did for the Live album. Chris did a great job of running it through his pop/rock filter. He also extended the tag & arranged the background vocals for a big ending. This was a landmark song for me because it’s one of the first that I arranged for another instrument (Sue Cosgrove’s flute). I brought in a local ringer (Ed Dickerson on fiddle) to add some harmonies, fills, & riffs. |

Since the day I wrote it, this song has been screaming for a horn section and a Gospel choir. Fortunately, my intern (JD Jump, what a cool name!) at the time did quite a bit of choir singing at Randolph-Macon College. He arranged for a bunch of his friends to come up to the studio to sing the echoes and beef up the choruses. Lastly, I brought in “Kid Wonder” (John Holden, who was only 17 at the time) to rip the guitar solo during the outro of the song. |

I can’t remember where I heard it, but someone was describing our separation from God and how Jesus bridged that gap through the cross & resurrection. I’m a visual person, so that imagery resonated with me and I responded by writing this little poem. I played it for my wife, and she loved the lyrics (she actually didn’t believe that I wrote them!) but thought the music needed revising. So I gave it another shot on piano and decided to keep it that way for the recording.
I usually put quite a bit of thought into CD titles. I was kicking around a few ideas for this record and sent them to my brother for advice. He told me that he liked “The Bridge” the most because “it just sounded like an album title”. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Music seems to be a universal language that bridges gaps between people (race, gender, socioeconomic background, etc.), and it has allowed me to witness to and share my faith in a way that I don’t think I would have the courage to otherwise. |

lyrics by Steve Kropp, music by Steve Kropp & Matt MontoroNotes
Why is it that the church has so many songs about the cross, but it has few songs about Christ rising from the grave? Michelangelo challenged the artists of his day to stop depicting Jesus during His crucifixion, but to focus on portraying Him risen & victorious! I took this a step further and tried to touch on the whole package...specifically, the Mystery of Faith: "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!". Supposedly Chris Tomlin released a b-side called "The Lion became the Lamb"...which I've never heard, but loved the title so I used it in the first line of the chorus.
I knew early on that I wanted this studio album to be diverse. I wanted the foundation to be the pop/rock worship songs produced by Chris, but I also wanted to fill out the tracklist with some “other” stuff (i.e., bluegrass, folk, classical) that I’d take more of the producer’s role for. I love the soundtrack for the indie film Once (about an Irish busker or street musician), and imitated that stripped down acoustic style for “That Was When”. Sue played the flute arrangement similar to the Live album version, and Ed’s fiddle complimented her parts beautifully. Then I added a subtle piano, and had a family friend (Elisabet Goodwyn) sing the fitting background vocals. |

What would this world look like if all Christians abandoned self for their call in ministry? Maybe our actions will follow if we start by singing our intentions?
This was the last song written for this album (early 2008), and one of a few songs that we didn't try out as a band before attempting a studio recording. People seemed to like the acoustic rock sound of "I Believe" (from Magnify), so Chris went the Counting Crows/Tom Petty route with production. I came up with the guitar intro idea that we actually ended up keeping. It'll be fun to head out on the road with something brand new & fresh! |

We tried this one out a few times during the summer of 2007, but then I temporarily shelved it. I put off recording it until last, just in case I ended up writing something “better”. However, it just had a way of sticking around…probably because it doesn’t sound like any of my other songs (i.e., the lyrical content, the riff & hits, etc). Mike (my drummer) encouraged me to go ahead with it since “it has a nice rawk chorus”. I’m so glad I did, and Chris made some tweaks that allow it to be a little more congregational. |

Well, this is definitely, a wonderful world, and I’ve got plenty of answers to learn. Let’s start with Bigfoot, Nessie, UFO’s and ghosts, or that one small step that I doubt the most?!? Contagious yawns, I feel a world apart. Or why does it seem like girls don’t… Father, are we there yet? Tell me how long it’ll be till I can stop singin’ this song? I can’t wait ‘till the beans are spilled, secrets are shared, and puzzles are filled! While we’re on the subject I started with twelve, found the key and then five got shelved. Sometimes I wonder if there’ll be more when I get to Heaven and He opens the door. But until then, I’ll keep pluggin’ away, use what I got make the most of today. I’m starting to hear the wind, and not just the roar. I’m starting to see the fill, yet I want more! © 2006 Steve Kropp Music |

I’ve been playing Chris Rice’s “Cartoons” to smiles and chuckles for years now. I thought about updating that song with today’s boob tube characters, but decided it might make more sense for me to come up with my own song on a lighthearted subject. I wrote this after seeing the DaVinci Code movie. In this life, I think we are often torn between truth and lies. Our faith and trust in God is the only thing that can help us discern these lies and shine light on the truth. I think we really need to unload our questions on God. We might not get all the answers now, but there will come a day when everything makes sense (1 Corinthians 13:12).
I thought about recording a studio version of this song, but I really loved this live version…especially Thomas Johnson’s keyboard solo! I ended up deciding to use it for this album because it was first of all different enough than the version on Live, and I felt it really captured the band’s personality. It was recorded at a summer 2007 concert by John Rensink (http://www.superbavsystems.com), who used to run sound for us on the road before he moved back to Minnesota. After listening to it over and over for a year, I gave John a call to discuss remixing it. We then fixed a vocal flub, added a saxophone, and threw in a canned applause at the end. |

"When the Saints"- traditional (Public Domain) Notes
There are quite a few spirituals & bluegrass Gospel songs that deal with dying &/or Heaven. One family favorite called “Do Lord” has the verse “I got a home in Gloryland that outshines the sun”. I love the idea of referring to Heaven as Gloryland. Scripture tells us that He’s coming riding on clouds (Mark 13:26) and like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2). I wrote the chorus about how we’ll want to be ready, and the verse content on what Revelations tells us we’ll experience in Heaven.
Mike & I originally recorded this song as a demo. It was drums, vocals & guitar and I overdubbed bass, mandolin, & banjo. We listened to it a bunch and really liked the raw feel and decided that we probably couldn’t do better if we tried it again for the album version. So I redid some of my parts and had Ed come in to play fiddle and sing harmony. The song was so short that we ended up adding a bit of “When the Saints” as a tag since it fit thematically. |

I often find inspiration for song ideas when I’m reading scripture or Christian literature. This song was a response to a chapter in David Nasser’s book Glory Revealed: How the Invisible God makes Himself Known. In Chapter 10, Nasser talks about how God’s glory can be revealed through our experiences. The line, “He uses our scars as beauty marks” sparked this first verse. I wrote the second around an acceptance theme, and the third about how we’ve failed God yet how redemption/love will win in the end. Like “Gloryland”, this was a demo that we turned into the album version by re-tracking some of my parts. |

Our band demo of this song was kind of punk, but I suggested to Chris that we record the studio version a little more Motown style after seeing a James Brown performance in the movie “Talk to Me”. Chris loved the idea & we put the icing on the cake by getting Anthony Campbell to add some soul with background vocals. |

I’m often sidetracked by some of the news features that pop up while I’m logging in to my e-mail. Have you ever noticed that most news is bad news? In 1967 the Beatles sang “All You Need is Love”. We all heard that song, but did we listen? I felt like I had to reprise that truth 40 years later. One morning I just got fed up and scribbled down the first verse to this song: “Well, I have this dream, that one day the headlines will read: Killed with Kindness, Divorced from Sin, Attacked by Prayer, This Just In!” In Mark 12:30-31, Jesus told us that the greatest commandment is to love God & your neighbor as yourself. My optimistic side tells me that changing the headlines is just four letters away.
I wrote this song when we were putting the finishing touches on Peaks & Valleys (my acoustic project). With a whole new album of songs, “Just Need Love” was temporarily forgotten. Every once in a while I dust off the shelf and try out my backlog of songs on my wife or band. I played this one for Tracy, and she encouraged me to start using it. I listened, and eventually decided it’d make a great closer. I really like how it has a dreamy vibe (particularly the glockenspiel) & turns into a big sing along at the end. |

This hidden track is a song called “Little Baby Boy” that I wrote when Tracy was pregnant with Tobin. She read somewhere (probably in What to Expect When You’re Expecting), how babies start to hear outside noises from inside of the womb. The book suggested that we talk to & sing to him so he gets used to our voices. I always liked the bit in Zephaniah 3:17 about God singing over us…so I wrote this lullaby that we’ve been singing to him ever since! This recording is just a simple demo that we recorded to accompany a newborn picture on the splashpage of my website. I added it as a hidden track to dedicate the record to him! |

This song has nothing to do with Fat Albert. I went through a period of time where I tried to write complex chord progressions and voicings in my songs. On a whim, I went back to some familiar chords and wrote this one fairly quickly. Sometimes it takes us too much time to get into worship. So this was a way for me to say to everyone (including myself) “hey, it’s time to worship the Lord now” which is not something we should take lightly. I wrote this in 2004 and have been playing it “religiously” at youth gigs ever since! However, it only made sense to record it live, and ironically this was the first arrangement that I was pleased with. By the way, that is a moog Little Phatty analog synthesizer you hear in the verses…you’ll hear it again on the live version of “God of Glory”. |

I would've loved to have included this song on Magnify, but it was written just a few months late. I wrote it at the Passion 05 conference. It started out as a list of qualities of God that I was jotting down on my legal pad. The adjectives just didn't seem to measure up to God's worth. For example, I've seen movies or concerts before that I described as "awesome"...or I've heard people describe their desert as "marvelous". So I came to the conclusion (check out Psalm 90:2) that the highest compliment we can pay God is to call Him God, because He alone is God and there is no other. This fact is probably something we should be rocking out to:) The little outro bit happened during a rehearsal, and we do it almost all the time now! |

I was playing this verse guitar part for months, but had writer's cramp and couldn't come up with any lyrics. I naturally found some inspiration after my wife, Tracy, told me she was pregnant in December of 2006. I started studying fetal growth on the Internet to see what I was getting myself into. The intricacy of the human body is just so amazing! I then did some research on a guy called Snowflake Bentley who figured out how to take pictures of snowflakes through his microscope. This is where your science teacher got the fact that no two snowflakes have the same design. My research then shifted to the vast aspects of creation...specifically the Grand Canyon and pictures from the Hubble Telescope. Simply put: God as Creator is pretty impressive! These lyrics eventually wrote themselves pretty quickly. However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Tracy came up with the little, "Matchless Flame", play on words in verse 2. Lastly, the loop at the very end of the song is appropriately our firstborn’s heartbeat at 13 weeks in the womb! |

Why is it that the church has so many songs about the cross, but it has few songs about Christ rising from the grave. Michelangelo challenged the artists of his day to stop dipicting Jesus during His crucifixion, but to focus on portraying Him risen & victorious! I took this a step further and tried to touch on the whole package...specifically, the Mystery of Faith: "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!". Supposedly Chris Tomlin released a b-side called "The Lion became the Lamb"...which I've never heard but loved the title so I used it in the first line of the chorus. Kudos to Matt for writing a beautiful riff for Sue's flute! |

We got a lot of snow here in Virginia in December 2005. This was around the same time that I was reading The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe...so naturally, I was daydreaming about when the beautiful colors of spring would bloom out this dead, boring white. Being stuck in the house lead to some research on the topic of redemption in the Bible. Specifically, I was attracted to the numerous times I found the phrase "all things new". So, I stayed in bed one morning and wrote this funk song. I'd love to give this one a shot in the studio some day...with a horn section and a black gospel choir! |

This one evolved a bit by the time we recorded it in a live setting. Since it was a duet on Peaks & Valleys, I had to figure out what vocal melody I should sing when I'm by myself. Also, without a string section, we tried to fill out the song with an open tuning on my acoustic and some electric guitar arpeggios. Sue and I had been playing instrumentals together for a while, and I thought "Here I am to Worship" might sound cool tagged onto the end..considering the lyrics fit theme wise. Both songs are in E, but "Captivate Me" is in 6/8, so it was a little tricky transitioning the time signature to 4/4 for the tag. |

I was learning to play the piano during the year it took to record Peaks & Valleys. Since those were the songs I was focusing on, I spent some time fooling with them without a guitar in my hands. This one specifically sounded pretty cool, and the band gave it a nice dynamic. Matt tweaked his mandolin part and also rewrote it in half time for the sax. |

This was my favorite song from Magnify…a number of times, I’ve found myself singing this in my head when life was just too much to bear…I hope you do the same. There just aren’t enough songs of lament in the church, so I try to sneak this one into sets when I can. I often read Jeremiah 33:3 before I sing this, but I somehow forgot to at the KOA gig so we had to add it in the studio (along with the bass). It’s kind of hard to recreate the studio version, so we went with this nice raw 4-piece rendition. |

This was the first song I recorded in a studio. It was also the song that got the most radio airplay from Magnify, and seemed to get numerous positive comments from listeners. I like that rock version, but was drawn more toward the sincerity of the acoustic demo. So Matt and I came up with this nice 2 acoustic guitar rendition. Also, I tweaked the vocal melody a bit (à la Counting Crows on VH1 Storytellers). |

My brother came back from college in the early/mid 90s with a CD of a band called Jars of Clay. At that point, I wasn’t exactly impressed with Christian music…but Chuck talked them up so I gave them a listen. To say the least, Jars were (and still are) pretty darn good…sounded a little like Toad the Wet Sprocket who was huge back then. One particular song that stuck in my head was “Love Song for a Savior”. The chorus is so catchy and I love verse 2: “sitting silent wearing Sunday best, the sermon echoes through the walls, a great salvation calls through it calls to the people who stare into nowhere and can’t feel the chains are their souls”. This song isn’t necessarily congregational praise & worship, so I didn’t get into including it in setlists until I started getting on the road doing concerts. I played it for Matt before the KOA gig, and he came up with this cool mandolin bit. |

"Spill the Beans"
(Deuteronomy 29:29, 1 Corinthians 13:12, John 20:24-29) Well, this is definitely, a wonderful world, and I’ve got plenty of answers to learn. Let’s start with Bigfoot, Nessie, UFO’s and ghosts, Or that one small step that I doubt the most. Contagious yawns, I feel a world apart. Or why does it seem like girls don’t… Father, are we there yet? Tell me how long it’ll be till I can stop singin’ this song? I can’t wait ‘till the beans are spilled secrets are shared, and puzzles are filled! While we’re on the subject I started with twelve, found the key and then five got shelved. Sometimes I wonder if there’ll be more when I get to Heaven and He opens the door But until then, I’ll keep pluggin’ away, use what I got make the most of today.

I wrote this song after seeing the DaVinci Code movie. In this life, I think we are often torn between truth and lies. Our faith and trust in God is the only thing that can help us discern these lies and shine light on the truth. I think we really need to unload our questions on God. We might not get all the answers now, but there will come a day when everything makes sense.

As if this song wasn't full enough...we elected to add a piano & a sax playing harmony for this live version. I put this at the end of the tracklist because I thought it might be a good theme for the listener to be thinking about before they took the disc out of their player. I hope my music inspires people to act...and to be the most productive, we have to be willing to give ourselves up to whatever God's plan is for us. |

I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. We can learn so much from our mothers & fathers of faith, specifically the parallels of what they went through in Bible times to what we’re going through today. However, I did think it was odd that women weren’t included in the lyrics…thus, I rewrote verse 2, which gets me some brownie points with the ladies:) I like to close concerts & retreats with this because I feel it proper to send everyone out with the hope that He is coming back! |

Did you know that you can't get CDs printed with music over 74 minutes?!? Kind of stinks, considering you can buy blank CDs that hold 80 minutes. Anyway, I had to cut some songs from the live project because of this...but you can still download them ("Healing Hands" & "Never Forget") here on my site! I don't know if anyone ever noticed but on the "acousitc project" (Peaks & Valleys) we used a forbidden electric guitar on "Healing Hands". So for the live version, I wanted to go with a stripped down 2 acoustic guitars & percussion arrangement. Enjoy! |

"Never Forget"
(Acts 2:22-23, Luke 15:11-32, Philippians 2:1-11) He turned water into wine, and taught the crippled how to dance He fed crowds with the scraps, and gave the outcast a chance He spoke in riddles and in rhymes, and dined with the lost But His kindest deed was when our sins hung from the cross! So never forget to remember what He was sent to do And don’t forget to remember He gave His life for you And don’t forget, that He loves you…He loves you! We all lose our way, or fatigue is our defeat But He holds out His hand, or kneels to wash our feet And when complacency consumes us, He’ll refresh our souls Or when life is in pieces, He’ll restore us to whole! So never forget to remember He has what you lack And don’t forget to remember that you are welcome back And don’t forget, that He loves you…He loves you! If you let Him sculpt your heart, He’ll use His own for the mold You’ll reflect the Son-shine, and bring light to those untold So through the winds of change, hold your candle high Let it glow for all to see, this love that won’t deny! So never forget to remember when your light burns dim And don’t forget to remember to have a heart like Him And don’t forget, that He loves you…He loves you! © 2004 Steve Kropp Music |

I love Christmas carols and often wonder if I could get away with singing any of them during the rest of the year?!? This is one that you probably remember being called “O Come All Ye Faithful”. I’ve heard a number of worship leaders use just the chorus as an intro or use other chorus lines (“we’ll give You all the glory” & “for You alone are worthy”) to make it a full-blown song. At some point, I started doing it as well and thought it was a nice way to start off this project.
We recorded this version during soundcheck for a gig in Pennsylvania. I wanted the church organ to start it off, but neither Matt nor I could do it considering we were playing other instruments. So, Mark Akers (our sound guy) jumped up on the keyboard and pounded down the G chord that you hear in the intro. |

A bunch of us went up to DC in 2003 for the Passion Experience tour. Charlie Hall and his band played a contemporary version of this old hymn and we all loved it. I especially dig the lyrical content in this song. In a world that is ever changing, always letting us down…Jesus is the only fixed, stable thing that we can stand on. When I arranged this song, I thought it might sound better (today) if we sang it victoriously…hence, the weird time signature, rather than the original straight 6/8. This more rock rendition is highlighted by Matt’s overdubbed U2-like electric guitar. |

Some of my earliest memories are singing hymns in church. This one I always loved, but wondered why it wasn’t included on any of the Christian music industry’s many hymn albums. So I took the liberty of arranging it a little punk rock. Although, it seemed to evolve into The Who after I brought it to the band. At any rate, I think this is one of the highlights of this project. |

I had Johnny Cash fever big time after seeing the movie Walk the Line. I just couldn’t get enough of the “Man in Black”…reading articles, learning his songs, etc. What I gather is that he lived a “real” Christian life, full of heartache, hurt, sin, and most importantly redemption. So around this same time I was browsing a hymnal for inspiration. I came across this line, “ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven”. What a great line! Now I can barely read music, so I thought I’d just take these old words and rewrite the music Johnny Cash-style. I like how it turned out and hope you do too! |

I first heard this song last year on the Passion 06 Everything Glorious CD. I learned it right away, but thought it might fit my gifts better if I played it as an intimate song rather than an anthem. Matt eventually came up with this nice mandolin bit to accompany my guitar chords. I really dig playing this song, and am always surprised at how many people know it. How did I just hear it for the first time in 2006 when it was originally composed in 1865? I suppose there are many more timeless gems out there for me to discover?!? |

When putting together the setlists for these live recordings, I tried to stay away from some of the standards (i.e., “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art”, etc.). “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, right?!? This song, however, was one of those standards that I felt bold enough to attempt. I tried to keep the melody traditional while I played some subtle piano chords. Matt added a little color with some slide guitar. Were these tweaks permissible? If not, please don’t throw tomatoes. |

This song is real special to me. We are called to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth, but there just aren’t enough songs out there that inspire us to fulfill that Great Commission. We used to sing this song around the campfire when I attended Bible camp growing up in Pennsylvania. So, it was fitting that we give it a try in the great outdoors of Natural Bridge KOA. This is Matt finger picking an acoustic guitar and me singing/playing harmonica. Ironically, I thought this performance was terrible the night we did it. However, it turned out to be a definite “keeper” after we listened to the tapes. |

I was fairly familiar with this song, but fell in love with it when Shane & Shane played it at Passion 05. This is our rendition of the hymn in its simplest form. Horatio Spafford wrote these words in 1876, three years after he lost his four daughters when their ship (headed to visit relatives in Europe) collided with another in the Mid-Atlantic. His wife was one of the few survivors. Devout Christians, the Spaffords relied on their faith through this tragedy embracing the prophet Isaiah’s words (in 26:3): “God keeps in perfect peace all who trust in Him”. |

This is the 2nd Fanny Crosby song (“To God be the Glory” being the 1st) on this project. I love how the theme professes ownership in Jesus, salvation, and the responsibility to glorify Him. Great lyrics, great melody, great song! How could contemporary musicians not keep using it in worship? This is our folk version with Mike on brushes & Matt overdubbing a mandolin complimenting his bass. I’ll warn you that time with a band is slightly different than time with the traditional pipe organ. |

I think it’s cool how no one knows who wrote this song. It’s even cooler that you can play this pretty much anywhere and people recognize it. Most worship leaders just use it as a tag, but I wanted to arrange it as a full song. I think I ended up tweaking the 3rd verse, and then writing a 4th…which came from the “footsteps in the sand” story you’ve probably seen on calendars, bookmarks, and wall hangings. |

My Dad’s Aunt Dearie sent me a letter and some music when she found out I was getting involved in leading worship. In the letter, she talked about one of her favorite songs (the Negro spiritual “Do Lord”) and her favorite poem. I was familiar with the song, so I thought I’d do some research on the poem. It turns out the writer, Alfred Tennyson, made sure that any time his work was published that “Crossing the Bar” was included as the very last selection. The poem paints this metaphorical picture of dying and going to Heaven with a ship leaving a noisy shore and heading toward peaceful waters under a beautiful sunset. I read the lyrics over and over, while sitting at the piano and playing what I was seeing in my head. It’s only fitting that this project closes by fulfilling Alfred Tennyson’s request. |

comments on writing this song…
One morning before leading Tabernacle UMC’s contemporary worship service, I asked my guitarist (Jeff Jones) if he had any song ideas. He played this verse progression that fit nicely with a bunch of Moses-like questions I had written in my journal. A week or two later, our lay leader preached on Bruce Wilkinson’s book, The Dream Giver, inspiring me to finish the song. comments on recording this song… Matt & I would jam to this one when I was warming up for sessions…so it had this jazzy feel to it early on. He eventually wrote Sue’s flute part, which in my opinion took the song to another level. I also really dig the door at the very beginning and the bowed bass in the chorus. I always admired singer/songwriters who could do their own backing vocals. I came up with some of these harmonies singing along with the demo…then Matt & I worked real hard one session to track them. As usual, the results of hard work are pretty fulfilling! |

comments on writing this song…
I read an interview with Bob Dylan where he said he’d often be playing other people’s songs when he’d start changing the chords or rhythm as new lyrics and a new melody found their way into his head. I had been fooling with Charlie Hall’s “I Will Overcome” when I came up with the verse progression. The lyrical content was initially inspired by a line in a Tim Hughes song, “When pain surrounds, I’ll call You Healer”. I like to take everyday phrases and turn them around a bit for song lyrics…thus the chorus, “Lord, lend Your healing hands”. Thanks boys! comments on recording this song… I know what you’re thinking…if this is an acoustic project, why is there an electric guitar on this song?!? Well, technically Matt used a semi-hollow body Heritage for that part…so there!!! Anyway, we thought about redoing that guitar, but it really gave the song a grungy vibe…very fitting, so we kept it. I personally love the bridge to classical guitar solo section…very tasty! |

comments on writing this song…
I have a Philippine friend (called Jose) that used to drum with me. He and his uncle were actually kidnapped by rebels in the 80s. Unfortunately, his uncle was murdered during the ransom payment and exchange, but he spent his last days praying and reading scripture. Jose brought his uncle’s journal with him to the States and allowed me to read it for song inspirations. One specific entry that floored me was a simple prayer that his uncle wrote to thank God for his different senses. Here’s a guy, starved and tortured, gazing out at the ocean and thanking his Maker that he can not only see the water, but feel the breeze, and smell the salt. I ended up writing the verses around that senses theme, and came up with the chorus while at a contemporary worship conference where we attempted to explain the presence of the Holy Spirit. comments on recording this song… This song was actually going to be recorded for Magnify, but was replaced at the last minute by the youth anthem, “The Refuge”. Everything must happen for a reason, because “Lost in You” seems to be right at home in an acoustic project. |

There just can’t be too many songs about salvation. I often reflect on life as if it were a road. The great thing about a road is that you always have plenty of distance ahead of you, yet you can find incentive by glancing back at how far you’ve already come. I was shooting for irony with the chorus, “I surrender, the truth has set me free”. Other than Christianity, I can’t think of any place where those two phrases could stand side by side. comments on recording this song… I grew up in a small town in the coal region of Pennsylvania, so I couldn’t even spell “bluegrass” until I moved to Virginia. I was surprised at how people in the South respond to this music…they’re happiest when clappin’, stompin’, and singin’ to the Lord. Funny thing is, I secretly really dig it too (in small doses)…don’t tell the Yankees! On this tune a local Fredericksburg guy called Merl Johnson is playing banjo, bass, fiddle, mandolin (not all at the same time) and singing with me. I originally envisioned this song a little heavier, but this recording has a cool chillin’ on the back porch vibe. I would be remise if I didn't mention that Matt made is vocal recording debut singing the bass part of the chorus and bridge. Congratulations! |

The title of this record comes from this song. One of my favorite things about living in Virginia is the scenery. Specifically, I love the rolling hills of the countryside. One morning I noticed a particular patch of hills near our home, and pulled the car over to document the moment in my journal. The hills turned into a metaphor of how God is always there for us…when we’re breezing through life on cloud 9 or stuck at rock bottom. comments on recording this song… I really struggled with how to play this one. I had the lyrics, chords, & melody, but couldn’t decide how to deliver it. Fortunately, I came up with the idea of making it a cowboy song. Think about it. A bunch of cowboys are sitting around a campfire. What kind of hymn would they be singing? “Even still, even still…” I love how the percussion sounds like a horse trot. |

In the spring of 2005, the 4th chapter of John kept knocking on my door. Just to refresh your memory, it’s the story where Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well. The boys and I were asked to lead a youth rally (at New Hope UMC in White Oak, VA) and of course the theme was “Living Water”. This was the third time that this scripture popped up in a month so I said “Lord, I get the hint”. After spending some time reading the chapter and doing a bit of research, I wrote a theme song to debut at the rally. comments on recording this song… When it came to recording this one, Matt talked me into a simple arrangement with a water sound in the background. I did some “surfing” on the Internet and settled on a royalty free light ocean waves sound. The ocean seems endless…so to me it symbolizes the abundance of the living water that only God can offer. The riff that is probably stuck in your head was my attempt at a Jack Johnson lick. |

Most of the time songwriting is hard work. So it’s always nice to take a break from straining and have one fall into your lap. I had just finished reading John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life and was strumming these droning chords in the key of E. I started humming words like liberate, elevate, illuminate…and eventually captivate. The song wrote itself after I confided in my good friend Webster (“to attract or hold irresistibly by some special charm or art”). comments on recording this song… I knew early on that this one could be one of the standouts of the album. However, Matt and I went back and forth with the instrumentation in it’s early tracking stages. When we added the strings we were faced with even more difficulty since the song now seemed so big. I ended up adding a piano arpeggio I had been hearing since day one, and he added the mandolin…sounding great, but still not big enough. Matt mentioned he had a friend from Georgia rolling in who might be able to help out with the vocals. I was under the impression this friend (Ramsey Buell) was going to sing some harmony to my lead vocals. We ended up switching rolls because this guy can just flat out sing…and thank God, because he gave the song the size it was missing. |

I got a little taste of Heaven when I attended the Passion 05 Conference in Nashville. Imagine 18,000 people gathered together for one purpose…to worship God! Who better to lead the music than the David Crowder*Band, Charlie Hall, Matt Redman, and Chris Tomlin?!? And, with speakers like Louie Giglio, Beth Moore, and John Piper, the messages weren’t too shabby either. During our breaks, I would head back to my hotel room to process the days’ events. I ended up writing “Outside In” and a bunch of other songs during this time of reflection. To say the least, I returned to Virginia filled with the Holy Spirit and inspired to grow as a worship leader. comments on recording this song… Most people think that making records is all fun and glamorous. Well, let me tell you…recording is the single most exhausting thing I’ve ever done, and I ran track in college! It was my idea to record the intro of this song outdoors. However, we ended up doing it on Matt’s back porch during the winter…the fire you hear was barely keeping me warm. After I ran through it a ton of times, it felt so good to get inside and out of the freezing cold. Then Matt goes, “Ummm, I forgot to push record so you’re going to have to do it again.” Unfortunately, he wasn’t joking. Once this song moves inside…I like the riff that the cello and mandolin are doubling in the breaks. |

“the Power of Prayer”
(Proverbs 3:34, 1 Peter 5:6-7, Luke 11:9-10, Exodus 19:4) What can let me sleep at night when monsters live under my bed? Who will mend my broken heart when my first crush turns me down? How can I try again when I missed the game’s last shot? By the power of prayer from my bended knees It’s the mercy of God that will soothe my fears And through His grace as I confide in Him The answer is the power of prayer What can help me find myself, when worldly things distract me from You? Who’ll forgive my regrets, and help me share a life well learned? How can I cope with the loss of a soldier friend gone way too young? What can I do to serve You best, yet still have enough to pay the bills? Who will keep our children safe when the bus pulls up on that first day? How can I show my Mother’s love, or be half the man that Daddy was? Here I am, now old and gray, with a past so full of answered prayer I put my faith and trust in You, and hitched a ride on eagles’ wings But hear me out, I have one more, my last request is that You take me home © 2004 Steve Kropp Music |

I think we ought to take Jesus up on His promises. In Luke 11:9 He says, “Ask and it will be given to you.” Prayer is like exercise…very few of us do it enough. I tried to think of different seasons of life and what we would be praying for. Prayer seems to be just as important today as it was yesterday, and as it will be tomorrow. comments on recording this song… There’s a folk singer-songwriter from Ireland, called Damien Rice, who I really dig. On one of his songs (Cannonball) he doubles his guitar picking with the melody he’s singing. I tried this approach with “the Power of Prayer”. I usually fingerpick the “pretty stuff”, so this song was a bit challenging since I use a flat pick and have to be strategic in what notes it lands on. The second acoustic guitar (played by Matt) filled this song out nicely. |

comments on writing this song…
A while back, my pastor (Robb Almy) asked me to find an arrangement of The Lord’s Prayer. To my knowledge, the only version out there was the one that you often hear at weddings. The problem with this rendition is that it’s tough for Christina Aguilera to sing, let alone a congregation. So I went ahead and wrote one with a simple, sing-able melody that we could actually use in worship. It should sound like I’m singing in phrases…that was intentional. That allows me, and whoever is singing along, to take in each and every word/phrase. All too often we just rattle off The Lord’s Prayer without conviction…in a repetitious, thoughtless manner. That is exactly the opposite of how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. comments on recording this song… I wanted a minimalist approach to the music so the lyrics/vocal would be the focus. Thus, we went with Matt’s finger-picked guitar, and my strumming coming in later for a dynamic shift. |

Living a Christian life is not easy. We must continually sacrifice earthly satisfaction in exchange for Christ-like attributes. This song was inspired by John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life. If you ever get a chance to pick it up…check out page 76. I love how Dr. Piper compares our walk of faith to the horrible trek Jesus had to make to Golgotha (the hill where he was crucified). In Luke 9:23 Jesus challenges us, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily, follow me.” comments on recording this song… Paul McCartney, Eddie Vedder, & Jack Johnson all play the ukulele…enough said. I love how this serious message is packaged in quirky music. That contrast was perfect for the reoccurring opposites motif of Peaks & Valleys. We tracked the finger snaps for this song when Sue Cosgrove (flute player from church) came over to record her part on “Here I Am”. Out of the 3 of us, I was by far the worst…I can only snap with one hand and only 75% of the time. Thanks to Sue & Matt though, it sounds kind of cool. |

comments on writing this song…
We talk a lot at New Season UMC (my home church) about becoming radical followers of Christ who seek to “turn the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). Gathering together weekly to worship is important. But we must also apply God’s Word to our Monday through Saturday lives. The need for missions starts in our own backyards and stretches to the ends of the earth. Pastor Robb (Almy) sends our congregation home with a study guide each week, so I used a bunch of his notes and scripture references to write this song. Since people often misuse the term “for Christ’s sake”…I thought I’d use it appropriately and include it in the lyrics. comments on recording this song… This was a tough one to record…it went through quite a bit of evolution in the studio. When I first wrote it, it’s jangling chords reminded me a bit of Brenton Brown’s “Lord, Reign in Me”. However, the drums & percussion gave the rhythm more of a hip-hop feel. Next, we put an electric guitar & sax down. We liked the sax, but weren’t feeling the electric guitar. Matt eventually recorded the banjo & mandolin parts that really fill the tune out. Lastly, we were pleased with the instrumental hook, but felt the vocals were missing one. One week before we finished the album I came down to fix some vocals and Matt had a new chorus written. I tweaked the words and we finished the song off! For me, one of the highlights of this whole project is the bridge in this song! |

As I was gearing up for the Passion 05 Conference, I spent some time delving into the scriptures that Louie Giglio built its foundation on: Isaiah 26:8 (the Passion website is actually 268generation.com) and Psalm 86:11-12. Naturally, as a songwriter I ended up regurgitating the verses into a song. comments on recording this song… I wasn’t really sold on recording this one. However, my wife insisted and the New Season (our home church) folks seemed to enjoy it when I used it as sermon response one Sunday morning. Matt and I thought it had a hint of the Beatles. Thus, we tracked it with Paul-like piano, Ringo-style drumming, and a George Martin-esque string arrangement. I love the tension this song creates…then the release with the ad lib outro which includes a couple of us actually singing “Hey Jude”! |

I grew up in a Primitive Methodist Church in Tamaqua, PA. Every Sunday, our Reverend (Reese) would close the morning worship service with a benediction written by John Newton (who you may recognize as the author of “Amazing Grace”). While I was serving at Tabernacle UMC, Pastor Steve Hay modified the lyrics and I eventually put it to a traditional-style melody. comments on recording this song… After first hearing the “Amen” part, Matt suggested we use a string quartet. It blows my mind to try to comprehend God as the Creator of something as intricate and unique as a snowflake or something as vast as outer space! If you look up this word in a dictionary you’ll find it’s defined by verbs like: extol, exaggerate, glorify, and praise. They all basically mean the same thing…to make something bigger. I read an article once that mentioned that one of Bono’s (of U2) favorite verses of scripture is Jeremiah 33:3. Supposedly he calls it “God’s phone number”. I related this concept to the reoccurring lamentation themes in the Psalms and ended up with this song. Usually our immediate response in times of struggle is “How am I going to get through this?” when our initial reactions should be a cry to God for help and guidance. |

The seed of this song was planted when one of my students with Down syndrome gave me a hug and said, “I love you”. So often when we pray we make to do lists for God. I think it’s a cool concept from Psalm 91 of God being “The Refuge” in which we can seek shelter from all of those distractions. |

"Trinity Song"
(Romans 3:22-26, Ephesians 5:18, John 14:10-12) Thank You Jesus Christ Your sacrifice forgives my sins I repent and trust in You And now I’m justified Praise the Beloved Son Praise the Holy Ghost Praise the Living God For He is Three in One Come Holy Spirit, come Intoxicate me with Your presence Illuminate me with the truth Empower me to conquer sin All glory to the Father I’m unworthy of Your mercy Your grace emancipates And sanctifies me like the Son I’ll never fully comprehend the mystery of the Trinity But I accept the challenge to fathom as much as I can © 2004 Steve Kropp Music |

I went through a period of time when I was just awe struck by the concept of the Holy Trinity…still am! As I spent time studying the subject, I became extremely interested in the respective roles and characteristics of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This song was a good way for me to organize the information and share with others what I had learned. Perhaps I should have called it “Dictionary Song”?!? |

I always loved that clever play-on-words approach that the Beatles often employed…and thought it a novel idea to use it in a Christian song. This one was started during some intimate worship time on my back porch. A few weeks earlier, a friend at gave me a poem that her 8-year-old son had written. The poem inspired the third verse and helped me put the finishing touches on the song. |
